Do you know if the meat you’re eating is in fact 100% meat?
South Africa is the only country in the world with no legislation defining what can be sold as meat. What you might think is 100% pure beef mince might not be. In many cases, it’s not.

In fact what you are eating is MDM (mechanically deboned meat), beef kidney fat, soy protein isolate and spices. This would have been illegal before Aaron Motsoaledi removed the definition of meat on the 10th of May 2019. What’s very scary is that the big national retailers have jumped on this and are screwing their customers like only they can.

Your dogs have never had this good! We have plenty of products that will keep them in supreme condition. At the farm, we have 4 hungry dogs. They are bouncy and have shiny coats all year round. I feed them a mixture of our pet products.

You can take your pick from hydrolyzed bovine collagen, beef and chicken bone broth, pets mince, dried liver treats and dried beef heart and tongue. Yum!!

Cooking with PJ Vadas

This month we’re making Farmer Angus Beef Meatballs. It’s unclear who invented the first meatball, although many people believe that the meatball first originated in Persia where leftover meat was used to make a dish known as Kofta. It is supposed that from Persia the meatball spread throughout the Middle East to China.

Some claim that Venetian traders brought the meatball to Europe through trade routes while others believe the Ancient Romans developed a similar recipe and deserve full recognition for the meatballs humble origin! Whatever you believe, meatballs are delicious. Check out PJ Vadas’s take on this.

Farmer Angus family and friends

One of our best friends is Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr Matt Durrans. He has literally been my lifesaver this month. 3 months ago I dropped a glass bowl and a splinter went into the side of my foot. Little did I know at the time but it had cut my peroneal tendon. The professionalism of his team and those at Cape Gate Mediclinic was really impressive. Check out my blog for more about Matt and some crazy photos of the work he did on my foot. Be warned: not for the faint hearted.

What inspires me

This month I am feeling inspired by Cormac McCarthy. The Border Trilogy is a series of novels by this phenomenal American author: All the Pretty Horses, The Crossing and Cities of the Plain.

In summary, it’s the coming-of-age of two young men in the south-west of America. John Grady Cole and Billy Parham, two cowboys of the old school, are poised on the edge of a world about to change forever. Their journeys across the border into Mexico, each an adventure fraught with fear and pain, mark a passage into adulthood, and eventual salvation.
