Why settle for carbon neutral wine when you can drink my carbon negative wine.

The relationship between good wine and healthy soils is as old as wine itself, but at Farmer Angus Wines we have taken this a step further. We have been sequestering carbon into the soils of our vineyards and pastures on the Spier Wine Farm in Stellenbosch since we began in 2009, and have taken a verified 25,385tons of CO2 out of the atmosphere since we began measuring this in 2012. Carbon credit revenue has contributed to the farm in a process that has been impactful for our staff. Half of the net income gets paid to our farm workers. You can read about our carbon story on the registry that sells our credits, and about the difference it has made here.

We also know that every bottle of wine we produce is responsible for greenhouse gases – an estimated 0.92 kgs of CO2e per bottle according to this website. To make sure our wines remain part of the solution, and we remain true to our values, we are retiring 50 tons of CO2e credits from our carbon project, making them unavailable for sale. This is more than 4kgs of removed CO2e per bottle produced this year, meaning a net saving of over 3kgs of CO2e per bottle. In this way we have ensured that consuming Farmer Angus Wines makes you part of the climate change solution.

Carbon credits is just one part of our regenerative story. The photo below was taken amongst some of our laying hens through whose rotational grazing we build carbon in our soils. You can read more about our laying hen operation here. There is lots of other information on why and how we do what we do on this website.

You are welcome to visit us anytime on the Spier Wine Farm in Stellenbosch.
