Farmer Angus farm worker set sights on Olympics

Dennis “Tambo” Muokwa has been working with me for 8 years. He has worked in all the divisions but he is now running (no pun intended) the irrigation team. He is the reason we started our running club. Three weeks ago, on the recommendation of coach Jacques van Rensburg, Tambo ran his first 800 metres race. Before that he ran 10, 21 and 42km respectively. His times were OK but he ran 1.58 for the 800 which was just 6 seconds slower than the winner in 1.51.

We are in negotiations with the Zimbabwean Olympic Federation to see what it will take for him to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics next year.

He lives in a wooden shack, gets up early and gets home late because of the commute, works a full day and then is still enthusiastic about training. We will keep you posted on his progress.

The Eikestadnuus ran this article recently about him. To read more click here
