Why we use only Dormer sheep.
There is only one word to describe why the Dormer is our sheep breed of choice and that is “bouvorm”. Afrikaans is often a more descriptive language than English and in this case there is no English word that describes the carcass shape and form as well as “bouvorm”.
Just look at the a$$ on that. In fact look at the barrel shaped chest which gived you more meat on your loin. The Dormer is to sheep what the Limousin is to cattle in terms of getting the carcass into the ideal shape.
LOCAL BREED
Another benefit of the Dormer is that it is the only breed of sheep that was specifically developed for the Western Cape. In the 1920’s the researchers at Elsenburg Agricultural College in Stellenbosch created the Dormer by crossing the Dorset Horn with the Mutton Merino.
UNRESTRICTED GRAZING
As you can see from the photo below our lambs get to roam across the farm. We do lock them away at night, behind an electric fence, as lamb is the take away of choice in Stellenbosch.
STARTING TO BREED OUR OWN
Up till now we have been buying in from other Dormer breeders. Recently we bought 46 ewes to start breeding on a small scale. Our first lambs should be on the ground in September.
PRICE AND AVAILABILITY
We sell our lamb for R75.00 per kg excluding VAT. Currently The Mount Nelson and Spier are our regular clients and then Aubergine, Ellerman House and Majeka House buy from us occasionally.
HOME DELIVERY
We also do a home delivery service where we cut up half a lamb. This takes up about 3 rugby balls and consists of about 24 chops, a leg, a shoulder, 2 shanks, ribs and some stewing meat.
